Well you can, and we have!
I floundered at obtaining this state for almost 15 years, and am finally in a place where I can reliably enter into the state of no-mind. Perspective bias is an interesting thing as it seems to easy now, like wriggling my toes but I thought some of the steps on my journey may help others.
The first thing I discovered that helped me was realizing that thoughts have volume, and your will is the dial!
a dial can me visualized for the volume of our thoughts. Try it out, see if you can make that background chatter of your stream of conciousness as loud as a lions roar and then as quiet as a mouse peep. If it helps visualize a stereo dial and play with it trying to achieve that volume described. Its a great tool, for example when I'm having intrusive thoughts that are trying to influence my emotions I can dial those thoughts down to a quiet murmur that are easily ignored, or I can push them out with a deafening silence that fills my mind.
The second part I would like to touch on is the foreground and background of our thoughts. There are few things we posses an infinite reservoir of and one of those things is our WILL!
We are gods with infinite will, and if we set our minds to it we can do quite a few things, and one of them is the splitting of our thoughts into the background and foreground.
Have you ever had a tenacious little tune that gets stuck in your head and wont leave? Try finishing the song and the tune usually leaves, but while it is there. You can still have conversations, do tasks, have thoughts, but the song is still stuck in your head. The song is in the background of thoughts and your normal stream of consciousness is in the foreground. Once you realize that you can utilize this for your benefit!
After a cultivation session that yields pressure in the LDT try to hold awareness there, now push that awareness to the background. Hold it there now feel the volume decrease until the sensation is in the background, now practice holding that awareness whilst you do something that takes concentration, like washing dishes. Now unless you want to miss a spot or break a dish you'll have to hold the action of doing the dishes in the foreground of your thoughts & awareness but don't let that glimmer of LDT sensation fade from your background of thoughts. When it starts to pause and turn the background volume up a notch then resume your action. After enough practice you too can be a wiz at ordering your thoughts around, they are YOUR thoughts after all.
The last two areas have been influenced by other occult readings, I've done my best to distill the practice out of any attached dogma but again please advise me if there are any lingerings.
To help develop visualization first get an orange, can be any fruit really but I really prefer oranges. Hold the orange in your hand and really appreciate the color of it, see every bump in the rinds, feel it with your fingers have every bump, ridge, whorl of your finger graze every inch of this orange. Hold the feeling in your mind, hold the sight of it in your mind, while holding these senses start to peel it open inhaling thru your nose, feel the spray of juice, smell the bright citrus scent, the soft sound of the tough skin breaking apart to reveal the taste flesh beneath. Peel the entire rind off while cherishing every single sensory aspect of the orange the sight, sounds (as minor as they may be), the feeling, the smell, and of course the taste as you eat the orange's flesh. After you finish and revel in the entire experience of the orange, take a little break go do something completely different, in a different room entirely. Now recall the orange experience, dial it up to maximum volume if you keep getting distracted but go through the enire experience, recall every sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound of the orange peeling and eating. Work at this as much as you want, change the base experience you are recalling but keep working at building the experience back from scratch, don't forget a single sense!
There are two really solid ways to approach the pathway to a no-mind state, you can get there through a silencing of the mind or an excitation of the mind. A mind devoid of sensation will exist in a stillness like a rippling pond being stilled until there is no motion at all. A mind filled with sensation will start as a flickering candle flame but rage into an inferno burning away everything save the fire itself. Sitting in full lotus outside the sun is out, the wind is still, the bugs are buzzing, there is chatter from the neighbor, your eyes are open in a soft gaze seeing everything but focused on nothing. You are the inferno the fire in your mind is aware of everything yet the only thing in your mind is the inferno of your will, burning away all the sensations and thoughts leaving only the fire of your will.
In your temple you are the pond still, and without ripple. Maybe you are blindfolded, maybe you have headphones on, the room is still without any movement of air, palette is cleansed with pure water, the room is filled with the scent of you, no incense no thing no pebbles in the pond of your mind for which a ripple can be born from. See the thoughts and sensations around you drift away carried away on the less frequent ripples of your pond until you enter stillness. I really love breathwork for this method as you can put the focus of breath in the foreground of thoughts at full intensity and let the world drift away.
Thanks for letting me ramble brothers and sisters.
